Lifetime achievement award: Javier Errea

Lifetime achievement award: Javier Errea

Here is a transcript from the SND website

Javier has had an incredibly broad impact in our industry. It’s an impressive list. So let’s get to it!

First, there’s the design work he’s done with Innovation International Media Consulting Group and his own company, Errea Comunicación. His team, based in Pamplona, Spain, specializes in newspaper design, editorial, graphic and web design, and journalism consulting in general. His high impact, intelligent work can be seen in publications across Europe, South America and the Middle East. Smart, innovative solutions, with journalistic flair, his work reflects the core values of everything this organization sets out to promote.

And he has contributed deeply and consistently to SND for a decade. He organizes the Malofiej conference – the world’s premier information graphics event. He organizes the ñh event – which assembles great speakers and honors the best of news design in Spain and Portugal. He also produces a book for that every year. And… he is the president of SND/E. For years, he has organized trips to the annual conferences for groups of Spanish journalists.

This year, Javier was instrumental in helping organize the first ever SND events in Milan and Rome. The popular seminars brought in 200 people.

And somehow, in amongst all this, he teaches a class in visual journalism at the University of Navarra.

Now I’d like to say something about Javier from the perspective of an infographic enthusiast. Through the Malofiej Awards and conference, Javier has dramatically raised the standards for information graphics throughout the world. When he took over the awards 10 years ago, they were basically dead on their feet. The absence of an awards book for three years had led to a precipitous drop in enthusiasm for the whole affair. But Javier systematically fixed the problems. He brought his intelligence and his style into the event. The change was remarkable. A beautifully designed annual, a revived conference with new ideas. He saved Malofiej. It is that simple. All infographics people should thank him from their hearts. And, believe me, we do.

No one could do this without a real passion for explanation through images. When you talk to Javier. you know right away that here is a person who is completely committed to the craft. He will tell you that although we are in a difficult transitional period, we are also in an age of unprecedented information, and visual-storytelling has more potential than ever. It’s a message of optimism, And one we can all carry with us from Denver, and into 2011.

Creative and innovative, modest and unassuming, welcoming and supportive. A true friend to SND, and an inspiration to us all.

For all these reasons, we honor Javier Errea with the SND’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ladies and gentlemen, Javier Errea!

Truly, truly well deserved. A friend and colleague. Lets raise a glass

Malofiej18 [Rubio display]

Malofiej18 – Rubio display at the opening ceremony and summit hall

A few weeks have passed since the wonderful Malofiej18 world summit at the HQ of infographics in Pamplona, northern Spain

It now feels OK to show this 'rough' video, taken with my iPhone, of a display of Rubio Fernando's work from Diario 16 and mainly ABC

Although the video is not of great quality, and maybe to small, but we can clearly see the raw talent, energy and love that Rubio had for his craft, and his profession

Infographic caviar

Infographic Caviar from Pete Guest at the recently redesign The Observer

Illustrative historical and scientific infographics really do please readers

Just pick up a copy of National Geographic magazine and look at their quality visual journalism

Their 22 awards at the latest Malofiej awards is justified

I don't know whether The Observer plans to do this every week in the Discovery

But I think it is great!

Apologies for the picture quality in the 'augmented reality' examples, but you get the message

Jaro: visualising Malofiej18

Jaro visualises Malofiej18

Fantastic illustrator from Berlin Jaroslaw Kaschtalinski, has captured his memories of the Show Don't Tell with John Grimwade and Juan Velasco, and the Malofiej Infographics World Summit in Pamplona from earlier this month

Jaro is a world class illustrator, who also produces animation, character design, story boarding and game development. He now works for the awarding winning über communication design group Kircher-Burkhardt

My Creative Director at the Telegraph, Himesh Patel and I met Jaro in the Jumping Jester, and then at the conference. He's a great guy who can't stand still. So many ideas and always wanting to create and draw

Yes draw

He's a great guy, and was a real pleasure to meet him in Spain

Infographics News: What are you sending to Malofiej18

Infographics News: What are you sending to Malofiej18

There are some fantastic infographic examples sent to Chiqui Esteban's blog Infographic News from Cath Levett of the Independent on Sunday

Esteban's 'no contest just sharing' share-a-thon is attracting many examples from various newspapers around the world, of what they would or might send to the University of Navarra's Malofiej Infographic Summit

Ciaran Hughes has posted some examples of his super work to Chiqui's blog

Infographics News

What are you sending to Malofiej 18?

Chiqui Esteban, the genius at la informacion – Mario Tascon's online news project – wants designers and infografista's to send examples to his blog Infographics News in English, and Infografistas en Español

Ciaran Hughes, genius at the Telegraph, is sending Señor Esteban great examples

The will be shown on Chiqui's blog on Friday

Esteban says:

...many departments decide not to participate. Some great graphics won't get wards and we won't know about them.

So, I encourage you to send what you are sending (or you would send if you would participate) to Malofiej. (You can send them to my email address, chiquiesteban@gmail.com)

Why? I think it's a good way to share what we're doing with no need to wait for the awards or the book, to discuss which are the big favourites of this year, or just for watch what's being done around the world nowadays.

There will be no awards.
This is no contest. It's just sharing

Malofiej 17: NYT - Peter Sullivan/Best of show

The NYT and NYT.com shared the Peter Sullivan/Best of Show during the 17th Malofiej awards

The jury decided to unanimously award this printed and online coverage entitled 'The Ebb and flow movies: box office' which explains in detail the weekly box office receipt from all movies opened in the US during the last three decades - developed by Amanda Cox

Although, my first impressions were a little 'grey' I guess the 'curves of pleasure' and sheer ingenuity and audacity swung the jury

Which leads me to think that there are two clear distinctions in our world of infographics;

those which are rendered by the experience, limitations and knowledge via our brain

and those which are rendered by the experience, limitations and knowledge via developed data software

Trust me, neither is better or worse than the other - both are valid and exceptional ways to communicate

I guess the industry faced the same emotional debate between those who had trained to illustrate by hand, and those on the computer

Of course the latter is purely design to number crunch, and develop data-driven infography

But most importantly the biggest difference is in the language we use; 'developer' and 'data-driven' rather than 'artist' and 'illustrate'...

... indeed both allow the infografista to communicate their content and idea

But the word on the street is that some fear the death of their traditional trade; I don't thinks so - its just another branch of the infographics tree

Malofiej 17: 'big red thingy'

OK - I am back from Pamplona, and huge apologies for the lack of visual

Basically, crap photo's from the Blackberry, and I had not organised web access at the hotel, for obvious reasons

But there will be a steady stream of stuff to come

First and foremost, I must congratulate all winners at this years awards

My sincere wishes go to the Guardian and the Sunday Times who won three medals collectively

Great news

I have just come across this great video footage by Brian Rea, former Op-Ed art director of the NYT

Classic!

Show and tell (3)

Intentional simplicity

My god we are witnessing another presentation from the NYT information hot house

Is there anything these guys can't do?

The amazing Amanda Cox is revealing her secrets;

More editing

More design

And more editing. Graphics mainly consist of uninteresting data. Throw it away. In the trash.

Very simple graphics have more impact.

She calls it 'intentional simplicity'

It is working well.

Great stuff... As ever

Show and tell (2)

An interesting presentation on 'breaking news' across the spanish press by Antonio Alonzo of el Pais

Most is based on acts of terrorism, such as the attacks in Mumbai. Which is great fodder for news papers and infographic junkies

All are showing the usual techniques; google map, illustrator diagrams, photo combinations. They all work very well

Interesting though, is how iberian infographics depts react when attacked by ETA, such as the latest bombing at the university of Navarra

Antonio describes these 'hand rendered' examples as 'hot' - meaning they are 'live' and immediate.

Very direct and very emotional

Just the use of different mediums to explain this kind of news forces us to; 'feel' accepting when the display information is hand rendered...

... and 'think' understanding the information when viewing a more neutral display by produced on computer

Muy interesante!

Show and tell [2]

Luis Chumpitaz has just delivered a great show and tell in the first presentation of the day
SND award-winning Luis is the graphics director of Arab Media Group in Dubai, UAE
I had the honour of working with him in developing his team
But the work produced by his department - reading left to right in english and right to left in arabic - has been given huge applause by the particpants of Malofiej.
All of his glossy printed promotional work was snapped up - quicker than free shots lined up across the bar of the jumping jester!

Malofiej 17

In eight days time, infografistas of the world will arrive in Pamplona, in the Navarra region, north Spain

It is always worth a visit, and always good fun.

Fun, intellect, and wit is the currency of choice.

Spend as much as you can.

Many of the worlds greatest infographic designers will be there.

And so will I.

I will also blog from Pamplona, if I can see my keyboard in the small hours

Cheers
